Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) is returning for The Pitt season 3.
HBO’s immensely popular medical drama takes place in Pittsburgh’s Trauma Medical Center, with each episode showcasing a single hour of a workday per season. The shocking The Pitt season 2 finale has left viewers wondering what hurdles the doctors and nurses will face in season 3. But before that, the series has once again become an Emmys favorite, including Hotsy’s recent nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
In the interview with Deadline, Hatosy was asked about Dr. Abbot’s lighter side in season 2, and if that flirtatious, gregarious nature would continue moving forward. The actor, who previously won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in season 1, said, “I think that’s his way, and it also illustrates kind of how he handles his role as a leader. In contrast to Robby, his style is almost like, I want to say, dad-like about him.”
He then elaborated that, “I don’t mean that in a good way. I mean that he’s sort of rallying everybody together, which I really enjoy. Abbot thinks he’s smooth, and he’s not, but I think that’s part of his charm. You’ll get to see a little bit more of that in Season 3, that I can tell you.”
Hatosy describes Dr. Abbot’s “dad-like” style. His old-school, authoritative mentality tracks with his previous military service, as he wants to get the job done well. It’s in direct contrast, at times, to Dr. Robby Robinavitch, who is often as deeply emotional through his own intensely personal investment in how the hospital functions. With several cast changes for The Pitt season 3 and more questions remaining, Dr. Abbot could take on a larger role next season.

When asked about Dr. Abbot supporting Dr. Robby at the end of season 2, Hatosy discussed their immense skills and struggles. He said, “Give them the most intricate, difficult procedure, life-saving, all these techniques, medicine; they have it. But when it comes to their own mental health, they’re complete idiots.” He added, “One of them is self-diagnosing himself and deciding to ride his motorcycle across the country without his helmet on. The other one believes that he’s fixing himself by working as a SWAT medic during the day while getting shot at.”
This openness in discussing the show’s drama and the traumas of its doctors highlights why Dr. Abbot’s arc moving forward will continue to be important. Noah Wyle has discussed Dr. Robby’s arc moving forward, and it could signal that he is trending towards getting the treatment he needs. Dr. Abbot, whom Hatosy describes as having “almost like a brotherly relationship” and “a sibling rivalry at times,” could be pivotal in Dr. Robby’s arc.
The Pitt is a great example of a team-based, ensemble show, where the whole cast, as well as the patients, define the story rather than a singular leading character. Dr. Abbot’s start as a struggling, somewhat isolated character has evolved into an accessible leader, who seems to be trending in the right direction in terms of his own mental health. Given how much Dr. Abbot has helped and could help Dr. Robby, his role is crucial moving forward.
