The following article contains spoilers for Dutton Ranch season 1, episode 6, “A Cowboy Saint”.
Beth may be much calmer and more measured in Dutton Ranch than the volatile spitfire she was in Yellowstone, but another character is filling her cowboy boots. In the Yellowstone spinoff series, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler have left Montana behind to start fresh in South Texas, a venture replete with challenges. Forced to cull their entire herd, the couple is now working for another Dutton Ranch main character, the formidable owner of the 10 Petal Ranch, Beulah Jackson.
While Beth and Rip navigate their shaky alliance with Beulah, their adopted son, Carter, is falling hard for Beulah’s granddaughter, Oreana, who serves as Dutton Ranch‘s Beth 2.0. Like John Dutton’s only daughter, Oreana is the beautiful, passionate, and rebellious heiress to a ranching empire who happens to fall for an orphan cowboy with a heart of gold, just like Beth did Rip. Unfortunately, in Dutton Ranch episode 6, Oreana is repeating Beth’s biggest mistake.
In the episode prior, Dwight warned Carter that Oreana would break his heart, which now appears to be happening. While fishing together, Carter confesses to Oreana that he is falling in love with her. Visibly uncomfortable with his profession, Oreana shuts him down, telling him that she doesn’t think either of them knows what love is.
Oreana pulling away from Carter is exactly what Beth did to Rip when they were teenagers, all the way into adulthood. Beth was terrified of being vulnerable and truly letting Rip in, but should she have taken that risk, she would have experienced unconditional love much earlier, and it would have helped her cope with the pain and trauma that comes with being part of the Dutton family. When Beth finally admits her feelings for Rip, it also comes with much regret at the years she wasted keeping him at arm’s length.
If Oreana keeps walking down the path she’s started on, she can not only expect to suffer a similar fate, but hers might be worse. While she is the new Beth Dutton, Carter isn’t quite the new Rip, which means their relationship fallout is shaping up to be even more brutal.
Carter Is More Like Beth Than Rip, And He Won’t Wait Patiently For Oreana
Carter’s backstory may echo Rip’s, but he actually has much more in common with his adopted mother than the man who won her heart. When John took Rip in as a teenager, Rip did everything his new boss and eventual father figure told him to do, no questions asked. If Carter really was Dutton Ranch‘s Rip replacement, he wouldn’t have disobeyed Beth and dropped out of school.
Though Beth’s loyalty to her father was unshakeable, growing up a Dutton and living on the largest ranch in Montana felt like a prison sentence for her. Carter feels similarly as he tells Oreana in episode 6: “I suppose I should be grateful for all they’ve done, but somehow I just don’t feel like I have a choice in who I am, what I do, or, hell, even what I like.”
Carter is trying to figure things out on his own terms, and while he doesn’t have Beth’s temper, he doesn’t have Rip’s steadfast patience either. Yellowstone audiences have never seen Beth romantically have her heart broken, but if she did, she undoubtedly wouldn’t process her feelings quietly.
Based on what we know about Carter, he’s poised to react similarly should Oreana break things off with him. Though the romantic trials and tribulations of two young adults may seem like small potatoes compared to Dutton Ranch‘s other storylines, given that Carter and Oreana’s families are in bed together, business-wise, a rift between them could have a ripple effect of intense, dramatic consequences.
What Oreana Actress Natalie Alan Lynd Has Said About Her Dutton Ranch Character
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Oreana actress Natalie Ann Lynd shed some light on Dutton Ranch‘s new Beth and Rip couple, and why Oreana has made the choices she has:
It’s really interesting, just seeing the different tactics that she takes to feel seen. Obviously, everything that she does is with intention. She is not somebody that is dumb… So her little teenage phase right now… I think that she’s doing all of this in a way for attention and love that I feel like, in the Jacksons, is kind of hard to get. We’re all just trying to be there for each other as family members, but we’re so dysfunctional that I think that with so much happening, she wants to feel seen, and she makes it very known when she walks into a room, but everything that she does, she’s manipulative, but it’s all intentional.
If that doesn’t echo Beth’s volatility in Yellowstone, nothing does. In the original Taylor Sheridan series, Beth disrupted every atmosphere she was in, rarely making it through a family dinner without storming away from the table, and throwing fists at family members and guests under her father’s roof alike.
While her aggression, particularly surrounding Beth’s treatment of Jamie, made her a polarizing character, Yellowstone took care to show the events that shaped her. Lynd teases something similar for Oreana, saying, “Later on in the season, you’re going to start having a much better understanding of why Oreana is the way that she is.” Based on how Dutton Ranch has unfolded so far, it’s guaranteed to be a fascinating revelation.
