The next Fallout game is sadly seemingly a long way away, with Bethesda Entertainment almost entirely dedicated to getting The Elder Scrolls VI out soon. That said, it will be along at some point, and fans are as invested as they have ever been in the future of the franchise and what the next game might be like.
The only really good thing about the fifth mainline game still being some way away, is that there are still plenty of opportunities for the community to make their voices heard ahead of development really ramping up. With that in mind, there is one area in particular where one fan seems to feel that a major change is absolutely necessary, but not everyone agrees..
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post stating their contention that Fallout 5 needs to ditch the pre-defined backstory of the protagonist in favor of Cyberpunk 2077-style origins. It’s a very interesting idea, but fans were decidedly split about the best course of action, across hundreds of responses to the original post.
“Yeah, I mean Cyberpunk amongst other games, has done this, and it’s fine. I think most people prefer the “blank slate” approach, like how in Elder Scrolls, you start off as a prisoner with no idea what you did or if you really did it. Even how Starfield handled it was fine, where you can pick certain “traits” that define your backstory that occasionally come up in dialogue,” one comment read.
Another felt totally differently, saying, “I don’t have an issue with a pre-defined backstories. I think starting in a vault is actually the best way to start the story as your character is a fish out of water. Fallout 3‘s pre-defined backstory works in my opinion, as you make choices throughout your childhood on the type of person you are. Fallout 4 is just you [as a] parent, in the military or a lawyer, [and then you] go find your son.”
“I feel like this misses the core structure of a Fallout game, though. The game you’re describing has no central storyline beyond the one you build for yourself, which sounds freeing, but I suspect it would actually remove any sense of meaning or purpose to the game,” a third said.
Whatever does end up happening with the next Fallout game, the fact that it’s so far away really is an upsetting turn of events that many won’t have seen coming when Fallout 4 dropped all the way back in 2015. Let’s just hope Bethesda manage to deliver the goods ahead of time, or we’ll all be old and grey before we get to see the wasteland one more time.
