According to shareholder figures compiled for the listing, Jio now has 7.96 million shareholders, ahead of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), whose comparable count was placed at 6.63 million. The difference of 13.3 lakh shareholders makes Jio the country’s most widely held listed stock by number of investors.
Jio had just 104 shareholders before its IPO, according to its red herring prospectus. Its ownership was largely concentrated among Reliance Industries and major global investors, including Meta, Google, KKR and Silver Lake.
The rapid expansion in its shareholder base follows India’s biggest IPO, which attracted more than 1.38 crore applications and cumulative investor demand of Rs 7.4 lakh crore across the anchor and public book-building processes.
Jio’s shares listed at Rs 1,358 on Wednesday, a premium of 21.36% over the issue price of Rs 1,119, giving the company a market capitalisation of Rs 12.53 lakh crore and making it India’s second-most valuable listed company.
The stock ended the session at Rs 1,417.35, up 4.37% from the listing price.
Jio’s shareholder count places it ahead of companies that have spent years building large individual investor bases. Apart from TMPV, Vodafone Idea has around 57.9 lakh shareholders, followed by Yes Bank with 57.6 lakh and Suzlon Energy with 56 lakh, according to publicly reported shareholding comparisons.Tata Steel has around 51.4 lakh shareholders, while Reliance Industries, Jio’s parent company, has 50.7 lakh.
Other widely held companies include Indian Railway Finance Corporation with 50.1 lakh shareholders, Jio Financial Services with 49.7 lakh and HDFC Bank with 48.1 lakh.
Jio Platforms director Anant Ambani acknowledged the company’s new shareholder base during the listing ceremony. “Today, Jio is shared with India,” he said, thanking investors and customers who had supported the company’s growth.
How Jio compares with other major IPOs
Several major Indian IPOs have attracted millions of investors over the years, although Jio’s shareholder count is substantially higher.
Bajaj Housing Finance, whose Rs 6,560 crore IPO was subscribed more than 67 times in September 2024, had 23.1 lakh shareholders in its first reported post-listing quarter. Its shareholder base stood at 22.4 lakh in September 2026.
LIC, which raised Rs 20,557 crore through its 2022 IPO, had 21.7 lakh shareholders as of September 2026. Hyundai Motor India, which held the record for India’s largest IPO before Jio with its Rs 27,870 crore issue in October 2024, had 7.2 lakh shareholders in September 2026.

LG Electronics India, whose Rs 11,607 crore offering in 2025 attracted strong institutional demand, had 8.2 lakh shareholders at the end of September 2026. Tata Capital, another major recent listing, had 11.5 lakh shareholders during the same period.
Reliance’s retail investor legacy
Reliance Industries has historically maintained one of India’s largest individual shareholder bases, a tradition dating back to Dhirubhai Ambani’s efforts to broaden equity ownership among Indian households.
The Jio listing has extended that investor reach to the group’s telecom and digital services operations. Reliance remains Jio’s controlling shareholder with a stake of around 64.4% following the IPO, while the company’s other major investors include Meta and Google.
Jio’s public issue consisted entirely of 27 crore fresh shares, with no offer for sale by existing shareholders.
The company plans to use up to Rs 27,500 crore of the IPO proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm.
