HBO’s 3-Part Western Masterpiece Has One Of Its Best Casts

[

HBO has produced many TV masterpieces over the past three decades, and one of the very best among them is the network’s greatest achievement in the Western genre. Besides its stunning period authenticity and quickfire, foul-mouthed dialogue, what really brings this show to life is the performances it brings to the screen.

Whenever there’s a conversation about the best Western TV show of all time, there are only a handful of contenders from the 21st century. But Deadwood is always one of them. This period Western is a tour de force that almost singlehandedly revived the TV genre, while launching some rising stars into the stratosphere.

The show would be nowhere without the peerless genre screenwriting of creator David Milch and his team, who blend historical fact and fiction seamlessly through a narrative imbued with gritty, heartfelt realism. Yet, it’s on the strength of its extraordinary ensemble cast that Deadwood’s finest episodes ultimately rest.

Deadwood Has One Of HBO’s Best Casts

HBO is the network that brought us The Sopranos, Band of Brothers, The Wire, Game of Thrones, and Succession, all of which feature all-time great TV casts. But Deadwood deserves to be counted alongside them, as a series with so many standout performances that it’s impossible to name them all.

The best of the best include Robin Weigert riotously ebullient performance as Calamity Jane, Gerald McRaney embodiment of villainy itself as George Hearst, and Keith Carradine’s beautifully restrained cameo as Wild Bill Hickok. These are three of the many portrayals of real historical figures in Deadwood, as the series bases itself on the actual goldrush town in South Dakota.

Historical characters don’t come any bigger in the series than Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen, who are both masterfully portrayed through contrasting approaches by Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane, respectively. Although these two larger-than-life figures dominate the screen, supporting performances from Molly Parker, Kim Dickens, Brian Cox, Anna Gunn, and Titus Welliver also deserve to be mentioned.

Timothy Olyphant Made His Name Through Deadwood

Welliver is one of two actors whose star rose exponentially after they appeared in Deadwood. Soon after, he found himself playing the mysterious Man in Black in Lost, and then an Irish gun smuggler in Sons of Anarchy. A few years later, he assumed that role that would go on to define his career, when he became Prime Video’s Harry Bosch.

More importantly, though, Deadwood made the career of its lead actor. Seth Bullock remains one of Timothy Olyphant’s best TV characters, and laid the groundwork for him to become the maverick U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified. These two Western roles are very different in style, but they both allow Olyphant to do what he does best.

The searing intensity of his performance as Bullock adds depth to the wise-cracking, sharpshooting, hotheaded Western gunslinger he inherits from the genre’s extensive screen traditions. Nothing about Timothy Olyphant’s life as an actor would ever be the same again once he redefined the archetypal Western antihero for the 21st century with this role.

Deadwood Is Still The Pinnacle Of Period Western TV Drama

The Western genre has experienced a major revival on the small screen over the past 15 years, and for that we have to thank Deadwood, first and foremost. This HBO drama series demonstrated that Westerns had a ready-made formula for compelling prestige TV shows with sprawling ensemble casts and premium production values.

Deadwood is now considered a modern TV classic, and remains the benchmark for the Western genre two decades after its release. One of the reasons is that no other series since has been able to match its incomparably talented cast.

For any producer looking to assemble a team of top-level actors in a wild Western setting, Deadwood still has the final word on how to do it. The genre may never see another acting ensemble like it again.
