The top women’s players struggled in Madrid as none of Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauffand Iga Świątek made it past the last eight. Hopefully the virus that swept through the Spanish capital is a thing of the past, too.
Beyond the big names, Hailey Baptiste will hope to do some damage again after she became just the second player, after Rybakina, to beat Sabalenka on tour this year, while Paolini will want to defend her crown after her career breakthrough moment 12 months ago.
The clay in Rome tends to be a bit slower than other tournaments, so expect some riveting long matches and extended points.
