James Dreyfus, Adrian Lukis Join Tracy-Ann Oberman in ‘Present Laughter’

James Dreyfus and Adrian Lukis are set to join “After Life” star Tracy-Ann Oberman in a gender-swapped version of Noël Coward play “Present Laughter” at Theatre Royal Bath.

Oberman, who is reimagining the play, will star as Geri Essendine, a female version of the usual lead character Garry Essendine, which was originated on stage by Coward himself.

“Geri Essendine is a hugely successful actress who has been 39 for the best part of a decade,” reads the synopsis. “Her personality, wit and charm have earned her a legion of devoted fans, young and old, and a coterie of friends, acquaintances and hangers-on. Just as she is about to depart for a tour of Africa, Geri finds herself besieged by a bevvy of would-be lovers, not to mention her long-suffering secretary, estranged husband and an obsessed young playwright. Will she ever disentangle herself from their tightening clutches and incessant demands? And deep down, does she really want to…?”

James Dreyfus (“Notting Hill”) joins as Monty and Adrian Lukis (“The Crown”) as Len.

The play will be directed by Lindsay Posner, who has directed Dominic West in “A View From the Bridge” and Tamsin Greig in “The Deep Bue Sea.”

“Present Laughter” is produced by Theatre Royal Bath Productions and Augusta Productions. It will run at Theatre Royal Bath from Aug. 26 to Sept. 5 before going on a U.K. tour.

Oberman previously played a highly-acclaimed gender-swapped version of Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice 1936.” She has also appeared in “The Witcher,” “Ridley Road” and “It’s a Sin.”
