Kate Mara, Leslie Mann, Ashton Kutcher Set For ‘Home Shopper’

EXCLUSIVE: Kate Mara (The Martian), Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), Ashton Kutcher (Your Place or Mine) and Billy Eichner (Bros) are set to star in Home Shopper, a dark comedy from director Tilman Singer (Cuckoo).

Based on the Dev Patel-directed 2018 Sundance short of the same name, Architect has launched international sales on the suburban thriller ahead of the AFM. CAA Media Finance is handling North American rights.

The synopsis reads: “Trapped in a stifling marriage, Penny (Mara) finds escape in an unlikely place: the Home Shopping Network, where charismatic host Willy (Kutcher) promises the perfect life, one must-have product at a time. Penny’s passion compels her – unbeknownst to her controlling husband James – to get a job on the Network, filling a vacancy while co-host Cybil (Mann) is off work. But when James discovers her secret, Penny’s obsession takes a murderous turn – and she realises that a household crammed full of meaningless gadgets might be exactly what she needs to get away with it. With the ambitious Cybil out for revenge and the body count starting to spiral, Penny is about to learn that the hardest thing to sell is a perfect alibi.”

German filmmaker Singer, who directs from Farhoudi’s feature screenplay, made his debut with Luz – a student feature that premiered in Berlin. His sophomore feature Cuckoo, starring Hunter Schafer, Jessica Henwick and Dan Stevens, premiered in Berlin in 2024, and was released by Neon.

Dane and Cole Eckerle produce for Bad Grey (Last Straw), together with Aaron Bergman for Iconoclast (Spring Breakers). Executive producers are Jomon Thomas, Geoff McLean, Dev Patel and Natalya Pavchinskaya. The plan is to shoot in spring 2027.

Dev Patel’s short of the same name was written by Farhoudi from a story by Leigh Whannell.

Architect’s Calum Gray said: “Home Shopper is a delicious, wickedly funny and riotous tale of sex, intrigue and unbridled ambition. I have not come across anything this singular and audience facing in quite some time. We can’t wait to introduce it to buyers at AFM.”.

Producer Eckerle added: “With his short and now this feature script — Ryan has created a unique, colourful and vibrant world, with rich characters that we feel audiences will devour. We could not think of a better helmer than Tilman to bring this story to life — his character work, stylized storytelling ability and overall artistry are sure to make this an unforgettable film.”
