John Dutton III may be gone from the Yellowstone universe, but he surely hasn’t been forgotten.
In a teaser released on the upcoming Yellowstone spin-off, Dutton Ranch‘s official Instagram account on Thursday, Beth Dutton [Kelly Reilly] and Rip Wheeler [Cole Hauser] reflect on John’s legacy, with Beth expressing how much she misses her late father.
“I miss him,” Beth is heard saying to Rip, who then replies, “We brought the best part of your father with us.” The camera then pans to a dresser, which has John’s famous hat on display, alongside a black-and-white Dutton family photo.
Fans of the franchise will recall that Costner, who wanted out of the series he had led for five seasons, to pursue other projects, namely his Western movie epic Horizon: An American Saga, was killed off in season 5B, with John dying in what first appears to be a suicide by a gunshot wound. It is later revealed to be a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by his estranged son Jamie’s girlfriend, Sarah Atwood. His death helped bring the series to a close, making way for the next chapter with Dutton Ranch.
