KPop Demon Hunters Gets 50% Discount in Criterion Collection Sale

[

KPop Demon Hunters officially joined the Criterion Collection earlier this week, and now the new release is already 50% off.

The quick discount has nothing to do with the movie’s popularity — The Criterion Collection just launched its November sale, which is essentially the distributor’s big Black Friday blowout. Through the end of November, every single Criterion release that has already come to market gets a 50% mark-down.

KPop Demon Hunters is the Collection’s most recent release, having dropped this past Tuesday, and thus narrowly makes the cut-off to be a part of this year’s sale. It goes without saying these are the lowest prices yet on all three editions, which are still the only home entertainment release for the massive Netflix movie.

Pricing-wise, the 4K has dropped to $24.99 (from $49.95), the Blu-ray is down to $19.99 (from $39.99), and the DVD is $14.99 (down from $29.99). This 50% discount math applies to the entire Criterion Collection through Barnes & Noble, which offers relatively standard pricing across hundreds of DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K editions.

The timing likely isn’t a coincidence, as Criterion often has a big release that just narrowly makes the sale cut-off. Ahead of the most recent July sale, it was the $400 Kubrick Collection, so at least this ‘headliner,’ if you will, is already more affordable.

As always, the Criterion edition has its own cover art. In this case, we get new artwork from Ami Thompson, who also worked on the film as a character designer.

New collectibles included in the Criterion release.

The Criterion cover shows all three members of HUNTR/X using their personalized weapons in a joyful attack from the skies, recalling the opening ‘Takedown’ scene from the movie. The trio is accompanied by Derpy Tiger and Sussie Bird, depicted in front of mystical hints at the Honmoon.

The new edition also comes with a fresh slate of bonus features. While it unfortunately skips out on a commentary track, it does include a new making-of documentary, multiple video essays, and collectible postcards featuring original illustrations by artists who worked on the film, seen above.

KPop Demon Hunters Bonus Features:

  • New 4K digital master, approved by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack
  • Full feature-length animatic, with a new introduction by Kang and Appelhans
  • New making-of documentary
  • Two video essays by filmmakers Taylor Ramos & Tony Zhou
  • Lyric videos
  • Trailer
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and English descriptive audio
  • PLUS: An essay by critic Karen Han

If you haven’t already seen KPop Demon Hunters, you must live under a very large rock. The movie was originally produced by Sony Pictures Animation, including some crossover with the Spider-Verse team, but dropped as a straight-to-streaming Netflix Original.

The generally low attention span of the streaming era was no match for the power of HUNTR/X, however, which proceeded to break multiple Netflix records and pick up a number of awards. Netflix has already promised to correct the record by giving the sequel a full theatrical release, but don’t expect to see it on the big screen until 2029.
