Star Wars fans, get ready to say goodbye to Ben Solo all over again. Yes, the franchise is closing the book on one of its most controversial characters once more, with the closing chapter of The Fall of Kylo Ren, chronicling his time as Supreme Leader of the First Order and the events leading directly into Rise of Skywalker.
Despite hype surrounding a potential cinematic return for the erstwhile Skywalker descendent, Disney has officially nixed The Hunt for Ben Solo, and instead left his redemption in the hands of authors Benjamin Percy and Charle Soule, who have significantly fleshed out the parts of his arc that the Sequel Trilogy glossed over. Now, it appears the time has come to put that project to rest.
As The Fall of Kylo Ren reaches its climax, it also offers another kind of shot at redemption: smoothing over Rise of Skywalker’s rough edges, particularly the whiplash-inducing start to the movie in which the resurrection of Emperor Palpatine is established in just a few lines of expositional crawl. The Fall might not fix all of Episode IX’s problems, but at the very least it can make them feel more earned.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Fall of Kylo Ren!
Marvel Is Making The Most Of Ben Solo’s Final Days 7 Years After “Rise Of Skywalker”
Star Wars: The Fall Of Kylo Ren #1-5 By Charles Soule & Will Sliney
The last few years have been a real Ren-aissance for Ben Solo. The Fall of Kylo Ren follows on the heels of The Legacy of Vader, and both series operate with the same goal in mind: make Ben’s death in Rise of Skywalker even more tragic, by helping fans gain a better understanding of the character’s journey. This has always been the essential point of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, but it has arguably never felt quite so mission-critical as it does with Ben/Kylo.
Rise of Skywalker infamously started with “the dead speak!” That has been the case in Legacy and Fall, as the spine of Kylo’s story has been his communion and commiseration across space and time with his infamous grandfather, Darth Vader. At points, this has been literal, with Kylo confronting Vader’s ghost, but it has also been thematic throughout. In a way, it is a meta-Star Wars story, reckoning with whether a derivative character can forge their own path in a franchise that deterministically “rhymes” and “echoes” and full-on repeats beats from earlier eras.
That is especially clear heading into The Fall of Kylo Ren’s finale. Like any prequel, where Fall ends up is not up for debate. Author Charles Soule knows he is sending his character toward an unceremonious, divisive death. His job is to make it feel more earned, to make it make sense in a way Rise of Skywalker failed to. The series has done a solid job giving readers that Supreme Leader Kylo Ren that the Sequels didn’t have time for, but this last chapter is going to be especially tricky to pull off.
Killing Off Ben Solo Was A Huge Mistake, And Star Wars Is Paying The Price For It
It was misguided of Disney to kill off the freshly redeemed Ben Solo in Rise of Skywalker. Star Wars fans were dismayed at the time, and now going on eight years later, that is even more clear. The heroes of the Original Trilogy had thirty more years of canon adventures after Return of the Jedi until Disney tabula rasa’d the first incarnation of the Expanded Universe. Yet the company has stubbornly refused to let the Sequel era organically continue in the same way.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader and Star Wars: Fall of Kylo Ren are the result of Disney wanting more Kylo content out there, but having given the character no future, it has curtailed its subsidiary Marvel’s ability to deliver it. Now, the franchise has to say goodbye to Ben Solo again. This might not be the last Kylo Ren comic ever; in fact, it almost certainly won’t be. Unless Marvel were allowed to resurrect that character in a post-Rise of Skywalker story, though, this is chronologically the last moment in Star Wars history the comics can engage with him in.
