It’s no secret that Marvel has been trailing behind DC lately in terms of the output and overall critical reception of its comics slate, and weekly or monthly bestseller lists are proof of that. Of course, it seems as if Batman’s crown will not be taken for the foreseeable future, as every comic the character touches turns to gold, yet DC has also been bolstered tenfold with the Absolute universe publishing line that has been met with great fervor and become a ubiquitous success across nearly all of its books.
With Chip Zdarsky and other architects tasked to assist in the direction and flow of Marvel Comics for at least the next couple of years, it’ll be interesting to see if big new efforts, such as Earth’s Mightiest Survivors banding together to become the new Avengers team in the wake of the Avengers: Armageddon event, have a profound effect. However, the best opportunity for Marvel to truly meet the same standard of quality that DC possesses is to answer its incredible Next Level and Absolute universe books with its Midnight universe, and a new update announcement suggests that Marvel wants it to make a massive splash.
Announced last month, Midnight is a Marvel Comics horror universe that could easily win Marvel a new batch of comic fans, depending on how gruesome and grisly its first three books—Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight Spider-Man—actually are. Midnight X-Men #1 was originally going to be released in August, with Midnight Fantastic Four #1 scheduled to be released in September and Midnight Spider-Man scheduled to be released in October, but Marvel Comics recently changed its mind and shared via Twitter/X that they’ll all be launching on the same day: October 7, 2026.
Plus, while only the cover for Midnight X-Men #1 had previously been revealed, the covers for Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Midnight Spider-Man #1 are revealed now, too (Midnight Spider-Man’s body horror being particularly harrowing).
Marvel isn’t so backed into a corner that a drastic comic universe debut like Midnight is its last resort, presumably, but it’s thrilling nonetheless, and a brazen endeavor that was surely unprecedented. Either way, these three Midnight books’ solicitations and covers are wildly arresting.
And, having them all released on the same day in October, it will be interesting to see how this bold strategy turns out, rather than giving each book a month of legroom. If nothing else, it’ll be a phenomenal way to celebrate Halloween’s spooky season this October, and these three books being the only new Marvel comics to be released on October 7 should help guarantee that they crest the bestseller list of that week and/or month with relative ease.
Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight Spider-Man are scheduled to be released on October 7, 2026.
