Netflix’s New 5-Episode Serial Killer Thriller Is a Hidden Gem on Streaming

[

As the nights get longer and the air turns glacial, TV watchers may start turning away from summertime hits like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Outer Banks in favor of true crime, horror, and other chilling series. However, the best that television has to offer this season might just be a hidden gem hailing from the Scandinavian side of the world.

Blood Sacrifice (or Blodsoffer) is a chilling yet challenging Nordic noir series — not only for its crime-centered plot, but also for its superb acting, dark and moody atmosphere, and emotional father-son subplot. Although viewers will need to turn on subtitles if they don’t speak Swedish, this slow-burn murder mystery is worth the required reading, pairing a puzzle-like crime with a noir flair rare among Netflix’s more mainstream series.

What Is ‘Blood Sacrifice’ About?

Like any good crime thriller, Blood Sacrifice opens with a shocking moment, in which Stockholm police receive a call from a woman who claims that someone is attacking her with a knife. The line cuts out, but operators are able to trace the call to an empty holiday house in Värmdö — an island not far from the city center. Two police officers are sent to check out the place, only to end up dead themselves; their bodies are later found in the house, brutalized, but there is no trace of the woman who made the phone call or her supposed assailant.

Blood Sacrifice‘s opening double murder isn’t the first time members of the police force turn up dead. In just a matter of days, more than three cops are murdered, and detectives are at a loss — until investigator Thomas Berg (Jakob Oftebro) takes on the case. In classic Nordic fashion, Thomas is a brooding, silent thinker whose one-track mind is focused on tracking down this serial cop-killer. But as he navigates tensions between local police forces and a warning from his boss, Lucas, not to make waves, Thomas realizes he has to pull out his silver bullet: his father.

Alfred Berg (Peter Andersson) was once a police officer himself, but he was forced to retire in disgrace years ago. Offering his expertise to this case will be the first time he’s been involved with the Stockholm police since his scandalous exit. The relationship between father and son has been splintered for many years now, but Thomas knows that Alfred just might be the only person who can help him get to the bottom of why cops keep turning up dead, and hopefully track down the furtive serial killer. Forced to work together, Thomas and Alfred unpack family history while hunting down one of Stockholm’s most wanted.

‘Blood Sacrifice’ Is a Masterclass in Nordic Noir Storytelling

Blood Sacrifice wears its culture on its sleeve. If the average Netflix viewer is used to crime thrillers like True Detective and Fargo, they’re in for a real atmospheric treat. Yet Blood Sacrifice strikes a very different chord than those more well-known series with their distinctly American backdrops. Set in the Swedish capital of Stockholm and its surrounding islands and islets, Blood Sacrifice takes place over the course of a single northern summer, when this part of the world is plunged into a continuous twilight where the sun never really sets – often called Nordic summer.

This bright scenery, contrasted with the narrative’s dark tone, is a hallmark of the genre known as Nordic noir — sometimes called Scandinavian noir or Scandi noir. From books to movies to television shows, Nordic noir can be identified by its gray and remote landscapes (think of places like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland). Look for isolated towns, emotional chilliness, non-heroic leads, and slow-burn police procedural action, rather than gunfights or car chases.

The Case Is Assigned
Your Detective Is…

A great detective is really just a personality with a method attached,
which is why we keep remaking the same four of them. Here is yours, what it says about you, and the
case for them being the best in the business.

Peter Falk · Columbo · 1968 to 2003

Columbo

You let people think you are not a threat and then you simply
never go away. Columbo is the only major detective show that tells you who did it in the
first ten minutes, because the pleasure was never the puzzle, it was watching a rich man
slowly realise he is in trouble.

  • You are underestimated constantly, and you have stopped minding because it keeps
    working.
  • The show invented the inverted detective format for television and nobody has bettered
    it since.
  • Peter Falk won four Emmys for the part and played him across five decades.
  • Your flaw is that one more question is rarely one more question.

Daniel Craig · Knives Out · 2019 to now

Benoit Blanc

You are the most interesting person in the room and you know
exactly how to use it. Rian Johnson built Blanc as a gentleman detective who is also an
outsider everywhere he goes, which lets him be charming at people who would never otherwise
talk to him.

  • You read a room in seconds and you are not above performing a little to speed things up.
  • Rian Johnson was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Knives Out in
    2020.
  • Wake Up Dead Man arrived on Netflix in December, making three Blanc films in six years.
  • Your risk is enjoying the performance so much that people stop taking the point
    seriously.

Angela Lansbury · Murder, She Wrote · 1984 to 1996

Jessica Fletcher

Everybody tells you everything, and you have never once asked
them to. Jessica Fletcher is a crime novelist from a small town in Maine who is so warm and
so obviously trustworthy that suspects confess to her essentially as a social courtesy.

  • You are the person friends call first, and you have a frankly alarming amount of
    information about everybody.
  • Angela Lansbury was nominated for the Emmy twelve times for this role and never won
    once.
  • The show ran twelve seasons, and Jamie Lee Curtis is now bringing the character back.
  • Your flaw is that being told everything is only a gift if you know what to do with it.

Raymond Chandler · The Big Sleep · 1939

Philip Marlowe

You expect to be lied to and you are almost never disappointed.
Chandler wrote Marlowe as a man with a rigid private code in a city that has none, which is
why he takes the case, solves it, gets nothing out of it and takes the next one.

  • You are the most cynical person your friends know and the one they would call at four in
    the morning.
  • Bogart played him in The Big Sleep in 1946 and the plot is famously impossible to
follow, which matters not at all.
  • Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and Liam Neeson have all taken the part, and every version
    says something about its decade.
  • Your weakness is a code so strict that it mostly punishes the person holding it.

Blood Sacrifice ticks all these boxes and more. It’s true that the skies are dark, and the men are emotionally tortured, but this crime thriller’s real kicker is how it critiques the welfare state. Like many Nordic noirs before it, Blood Sacrifice plants viewers in the heart of the police force to upend the myth of Sweden as one of the most egalitarian places on Earth. Many non-Nordic citizens associate Sweden and its Scandi neighbors with social democracy, universal healthcare, and gender equality. However, in addition to exploring issues like racism, misogyny, and class inequality, a good Nordic noir makes it its business to reveal society’s dark underbelly — and Blood Sacrifice is no exception.

‘Blood Sacrifice’ Stars Two of Europe’s Best Leading Men

Forget the Jake Gyllenhaals and the Clint Eastwoods of the world; after watching Blood Sacrifice, viewers will be clamoring for more of Oftebro and Andersson, who elevate the show with intense yet grounded performances. Oftebro first made headlines in 2014 when he was cast as the star in 1864, a Danish war epic that broke national records with its over-the-top budget. Here, the scale shrinks down, allowing Oftebro to wow audiences with his intimate portrayal of a detective at the end of his rope.

Likewise, Blood Sacrifice becomes an expert two-hander by adding Andersson to the mix. The Swedish actor is no stranger to crime thrillers, having starred in the 2009 blockbuster The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Here, his performance is far more grounded and even more stirring for it. As an estranged father and maligned ex-cop, Andersson plays Alfred Berg with a chip on his shoulder; not only does this man have a killer to catch, but he also has much to prove about his personal life. The goal is three-fold: find the killer, repair his relationship with his son, and mend his professional reputation. It’s a big ask for an actor, and in less skilled hands, the role of Alfred could have seemed frenzied or unlikable. However, Andersson brings a certain softness to the role, and his chemistry with Oftebro makes for a believable father-son dynamic. Whether you’re a fan of Nordic noir or serial killer shows in general, Blood Sacrifice is sure to surprise, and maybe even move, viewers of all tastes and backgrounds.
