Netflix’s Upcoming Romantasy Movie Will Make Up For ACOTAR’s Cancelation

[

Hulu’s ACOTAR TV show isn’t coming to fruition, but Netflix’s upcoming romantasy movie will make up for it. Many streamers have tried and failed to bring fan-favorite BookTok books to life, canceling the projects.

Movies like The Cruel Prince and TV shows like Throne of Glass have fallen into development hell, despite their potential. The Eyes of the Dragon was outright canceled. However, the most painful one had to be A Court of Thrones and Roses.

If Hulu had followed through on its plans to make a TV version of A Court of Thorns and Roses, it could have taken the crown for the best BookTok adaptation. The only viable competitor would be Fourth Wing, which pulls much of the same audience. However, there is enough room for both of them to have succeeded.

Unfortunately, we won’t get an onscreen adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses anytime soon. The rights reverted back to the author, and she can pick a new producer. Even if Sarah J. Maas found a partner right this moment, though, it would take time to develop and produce ACOTAR onscreen.

As such, audiences now have to turn to other shows to fill the void. Luckily, one romantasy is the perfect fit. Quicksilver is the best upcoming movie for people disappointed by Hulu’s cancellation of their A Court of Thorns and Roses TV show. The 2024 book has enough similarities to A Court of Thorns & Roses to keep audiences engaged, while also adding something fresh to the mix.

Netflix’s Quicksilver Will Be A Chaotic & Dark Romantasy

Like A Court of Thorns and Roses, Quicksilver features a badass human woman protagonist and a broody love interest who is a part of the fae nobility. Both Quicksilver and ACOTAR’s men leads are jerks at the start of the books, creating a true enemies-to-lovers story. The guy can also read her mind. Though, hot take, Quicksilver’s Kingfisher is a better character.

However, there are also a ton of differences that will keep things fresh, rather than a direct copy-and-paste. Quicksilver is a lot grittier, with a survivalist tone. The story explores poverty and scarcity, adding to its social commentary.

Fae aren’t the only mythological creatures, as Quicksilver also features vampires and alchemists. The story has a lot more chaos and twists than A Court of Thorns and Roses. There’s just so much fantasy romance to enjoy. If the Netflix movie is half as good as the book, it will be a perfect watch.

The Quicksilver Adaptation Will Bring The Spice Just Like ACOTAR

One of the key differences between ACOTAR and Quicksilver is that the latter is significantly, and I do mean significantly, spicier than the Sarah J. Maas book, which is saying something because ACOTAR is often called fae smut.

The level of spice in Quicksilver might concern some folks since Netflix isn’t exactly known for its spicy content. It would be easy to jump to the conclusion that they’d tone things down. However, the streamer actually has quite a bit of steamy, sexy, and explicit TV shows and movies. They just aren’t promoted in the same way as others.

Sex/Life, Bridgerton, and Happy Ending are on the lighter side of their selections. However, they also have the NC-17 movies Duck Butter and Blue Is The Warmest Color. These shows and movies prove to me that they won’t necessarily tone down the Quicksilver adaptation to put it on the streaming site.

Quicksilver Is Less Likely Than ACOTAR To Get Canceled

After the cancellation of ACOTAR, fans might be a little jaded about fantasy adaptations. However, Netflix is much less likely to cancel the Quicksilver movie. Both Quicksilver and ACOTAR would take a huge budget to create due to their high-fantasy settings. However, the length of time makes a big difference in this case.

Netflix’s Quicksilver will probably max out at 2 hours, though 1.5 hours is more common for the streamer. This is a lot less than the 8+ hours of content Hulu would have needed to create for just one season of ACOTAR. The adaptation of the 2024 book is a much lower commitment.

Plus, Quicksilver has the potential for more movies if the first one does well. The second book, Brimstone, came out in November 2025, and the third book in the Fae & Alchemy series will release in November 2026. There’s no way Quicksilver will outpace its source material because the first movie isn’t even out yet.

Unless they filmed and released movies back-to-back, which seems highly unlikely, they will have time to make informed decisions based on Quicksilver’s viewership. If the first movie flops, they don’t continue. If it succeeds, they make another one. It might not be the same as an ACOTAR TV show, but it’s definitely a satisfying alternative.
