We’ve known that a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is on the way for a while, but most of the details surrounding the project remain unclear. For the time being, developer CD Projekt Red is focusing on promotion of the next game in The Witcher franchise, so it’s unlikely that we’ll get a more complete look at what the next Cyberpunk will be for quite some time yet.
In the meantime, CDPR is still revealing some details of development in a quieter way. Some of the most interesting teases for Cyberpunk 2077 so far have come from job listings, and the latest update is no exception.
A new CD Projekt Red job listing on SmartRecruiters is seeking a Lead Quest Programmer for Cyberpunk 2, with a few interesting details regarding what CDPR is looking for. Most notably, the section focusing on “Nice to Have” skills mentions an “Understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronization for game state/quests.”
While this isn’t listed as a hard qualification, it suggests that multiplayer may be in the works for Cyberpunk 2. At any rate, it looks like CDPR is considering some form of online features beyond what was present in the devoutly single-player Cyberpunk 2077. Fans shouldn’t have to worry about CDPR pivoting away from the story-focused approach of the first game, however, with the job listing also emphasizing the “complex, narrative-driven experiences” that the studio is known for.
This isn’t the first suggestion that Cyberpunk 2 might dip its toes into multiplayer. A job listing from 2025 also hinted at the prospect, mentioning “network architecture and online systems” as the focus for a Lead Network Engineer role. Aside from adding further support to the general possibility of multiplayer, the biggest reveal in the new job listing is that players may be able to take on quests in multiplayer, suggesting that CDPR is considering more than just a competitive matchmaking mode or something comparably limited in scope.
Beyond that, most of what’s covered in the job listing sticks to what we already know about the game. CDPR is recommending familiarity with Unreal Engine, for example, as the studio is pivoting from the proprietary engine used in the first game to the seemingly omnipresent Unreal Engine 5. The majority of the job requirements are similar to what any company would expect from a quest programmer, focusing on technical skills and the ability to work with the rest of the team.
It will likely be a while before CDPR addresses multiplayer plans for Cyberpunk 2 in any official sense, but it’s certainly something interesting to speculate about in the meantime. Any type of multiplayer would be a big step forward for the developer, which has never followed the Rockstar Games example of using its compelling settings as sandboxes for online play. Expecting something like GTA Online for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel might be a bit too much, but even competitive duels or a few co-op missions could be fun.
