See First Appearance Of Spider-Man’s Historic New Villain

[

Marvel reveals the first full look at Spider-Man‘s next antagonist, whose real identity is still unknown. Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery combines an extraordinary variety of origins and abilities. Street-level crime bosses like Kingpin, Tombstone, Hammerhead, and Mister Negative make Peter Parker a full-fledged street-level hero, while evil geniuses like Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, Morbius, and the Lizard, remind Peter of the consequences of unchecked ambition. Supervillains like Sandman, Electro, Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Rhino showcase wildly different superhuman abilities, whereas Mysterio, Chameleon, Kraven the Hunter, and Carnage hold deep personal vendettas against the wall-crawler.

Although Spider-Man has battled hundreds of enemies, only a select few share a truly intimate connection with Peter Parker himself. Almost every major chapter of Spider-Man’s early career has been shaped in one way or another by the Green Goblin, from Gwen Stacy’s death to the Harry Osborn saga to the Clone Saga to Norman Osborn’s recent heroic impersonation of Spider-Man. What hasn’t been influenced by Green Goblin certainly has been shaped by Doctor Octopus or Venom, whose hatred for Spider-Man has transformed into a unique mix of sworn rivalry and genuine respect.

Spider-Man’s next enemy arrives at a major landmark for the web-slinger, and he may have a deep connection to Peter Parker’s life that makes them more than a temporary threat.

Spider-Man Finally Meets His Brand-New Villain Ravage

The Amazing Spider-Man #1000; Written By Joe Kelly; Art By Pepe Larraz

Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man #1000 is set to compile several different short storylines from various writers and artists who celebrate Peter Parker’s sixty-four-year history. However, The Amazing Spider-Man #1000 also continues the series’ overarching plot with the first encounter between Spidey and his next big foe, Ravage. Marvel’s first glimpses at Ravage reveal his full black-and-yellow costume, with red boots, red gauntlets, and a red emblem, plus a black fur cape, a Black Knight-like helmet, and a sharp gold chain he uses as his main weapon.

Title Writers and Artists Plot Information
“Ravaged” Joe Kelly & Pepe Larraz Introduces Ravag.
“Now I Can Rest” Dan Slott & Marcos Martin Revisits Uncle Ben’s death.
“The Gesture” Brian Michael Bendis & Stuart Immonen Team-up featuring Spider-Man and the Avengers.
“Tears of the Spider-Queen” Frank Miller & Peach Momoko Spider-Man vs the Hand.
“Still Standing” Noah Hawley & Patrick Gleason Introduces an older, weathered Peter Parker.
“Requiem for a Goblin” J.M. DeMatteis & Humberto Ramo Revisits Harry Osborn’s death.
“Of Webs and Six-Guns” Larry Lieber & Giuseppe Camuncol Takes Spider-Man on a Western adventure.

The pages written by Joe Kelly and illustrated by Pepe Larraz feature Spider-Man fighting an airborne Ravage in the skies and between skyscrapers, as well as a scene where Peter Parker rushes through an emergency room and another where he remembers his superhero origin story and his childhood, with special emphasis on Aunt May and Uncle Ben. The context for this story is yet to be revealed, but these pages suggest Ravage’s arrival will overwhelm Spider-Man at a vulnerable moment, potentially leading to a major death or a near-death scenario for one of Peter Parker’s loved ones.

The Ravage Needs To Be More Than Just Another Spider-Man Foe

Expectations Surrounding The Ravage’s Introduction Are High

Spider-Man has repeatedly struggled against most of his enemies, even as recently as his battle against the mind-manipulating Spore. In order for Ravage to be a memorable villain worthy of commemorating The Amazing Spider-Man #1000, Ravage needs to be more than just a powerful antagonist who temporarily overwhelms Spidey before the wall-crawler turns the tide. Ravage’s abilities and weapons must be groundbreaking, and his impact on Spider-Man’s life must have permanent consequences. Killing someone like Aunt May would place Ravage on the top tier of Spider-Man villains, but Ravage would still need a deeper personal connection to Peter.

Beyond anything Ravage may achieve in The Amazing Spider-Man #1000, he also needs to stick around in the long run in order to uphold his eventful debut. The Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Carnage, Mysterio, and Kraven the Hunter are all obsessed with Spider-Man, while Kingpin, Sandman, Mister Negative, and Silver Sable fight Peter Parker on a regular basis, almost exclusively because New York’s Friendly Neighborhood hero tends to represent an obstacle for their work. Ravage could either join one of these groups of villains or represent a unique kind of threat to Peter Parker, like Morlun’s existential need to hunt down Spider-Totems.

How would you write the Ravage into Spider-Man lore?
