Shock DCU Superhero Enemy Confirmed for Lobo’s New Appearance

[

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Lobo #2

Jason Momoa is officially stepping into the role of Lobo for the new DCU, and anticipation is quite high for his upcoming debut in Supergirl, releasing in just a couple of months. However, DC Comics has just done something very exciting with The Main Man, seemingly in honor of Momoa’s brand-new DC role, by giving Lobo a surprising new hero rival in his latest appearance.

While Momoa is about to make his DCU debut as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl, the actor originally played Aquaman in the previous cinematic universe before it was rebooted by new DC Studios head James Gunn and Peter Safran. Momoa made multiple appearances as Aquaman, first appearing in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League before starring in two Aquaman movies (and multiple cameo appearances). However, Momoa is now getting the chance to play Lobo, the DC role many believe he was born to play.

That said, rather than fully ignoring Jason Momoa’s past role as Aquaman in the previous DCEU, the comics are instead having some fun with the exciting change, resulting in a very meta and highly entertaining match-up between Lobo and Aquaman himself in the new Lobo #2 by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona.

2 Months Before Supergirl, Lobo Takes On Aquaman Ahead of His DCU Debut

In a perfectly timed bit of synergy, DC Comics has pitted Lobo against Aquaman just months before his big-screen debut in the DCU.

In the new Lobo #2, the titular intergalactic bounty hunter continues to work for Omni Omega+ Entertainment Corp., starring in his own galaxy-spanning reality show called “The Main Man”, where Lobo’s various jobs are broadcast as anti-hero entertainment. However, focus group data has resulted in Lobo receiving a new costume and look, as well as the suits’ deciding that Lobo needs to fight a legitimate hero to boost ratings.

As a result, Lobo is given a contract to take on none other than Emperor Aquaman, currently traveling the cosmos and building his new intergalactic empire.

Although Aquaman rightly mocks Lobo’s ridiculous new look, the major brawl between the two powerhouses ends after an hour-long stalemate, only concluding when Lobo’s contract is abruptly canceled. Apparently, O.O.E.C just got bought out by Galactic Rodent Productions (undoubtedly the DC cosmic version of Disney).

Will Lobo Ever Fight Aquaman In James Gunn’s DC Universe?

As funny as this brawl between Lobo and Aquaman is, the big question now is whether this showdown could ever happen on the big screen. In a great bit of timing, Jason Momoa literally just joked with Peter Safran about wanting to do a Lobo/Aquaman project on stage at CinemaCon the day before Lobo #2 released from DC Comics.

Could a showdown between Lobo and Arthur Curry happen one day in the new DCU? It’s certainly possible. That said, it seems doubtful that Momoa would still be playing Aquaman now that he’s attached to Lobo.

It’s more than likely that the King of Atlantis will eventually be recast for future appearances in the new DC Universe. Although some actors/roles are being maintained across universes, like John Cena as Peacemaker and/or Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the biggest roles have been or will be recast, like David Corenswet now playing Superman instead of Henry Cavill.

Regardless, a live-action Lobo and Aquaman clash does have a lot of potential. After all, this new issue of Lobo has just proven as much. While nothing has been officially confirmed just yet, Lobo #2 serves as a fun glimpse of what might be for The Main Man and King of Atlantis in the DCU.

Lobo #2 is on sale now from DC Comics.
