Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Maul – Shadow Lord season 1, episode 5.Dave Filoni and Star Wars have officially brought back one of the rarest and most broken Force powers in canon for Maul – Shadow Lord. Force powers have always been an important part of Star Wars, ever since Obi-Wan Kenobi first performed a Jedi mind trick in A New Hope. There’s the standard array of powers, like telekinesis, and more advanced techniques, like Force lightning, that most Jedi and Sith have been using for decades.
Over the years, however, Star Wars has added dozens of Force powers into canon. Some of these powers are exceedingly rare and have only been seen in a single series or comic, such as Mace Windu’s shatterpoint ability. The Star Wars Expanded Universe, as well, had dozens more Force powers that are no longer possible in canon, such as many of Galen Marek’s abilities in The Force Unleashed.
Star Wars also periodically implements new Force powers and draws upon older powers from Star Wars Legends. Ahsoka season 1, for example, gave Jacen Syndulla a version of Force listening, which first appeared in the Expanded Universe. Every so often, Star Wars will also reveal that characters are capable of using a Force ability that was previously thought to be exceedingly rare, as is the case with Maul – Shadow Lord.
Maul – Shadow Lord Implied That Marrok Has Psychometry
Now, one of the most subtly powerful and rarest Force powers in Star Wars canon reappeared in Maul – Shadow Lord. That power is psychometry, which grants a Force user the ability to see glimpses of the past while physically touching an object or place. There have only been a handful of Force users who were capable of using psychometry, as the ability is believed to be innate, meaning a Force user is born with it.
Notable Force psychometry users in Star Wars canon include Quinlan Vos in The Clone Wars, Cal Kestis in Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor, Rey Skywalker in the sequel trilogy, and Ahsoka Tano in Ahsoka. Now, however, Maul – Shadow Lord has implied that the Inquisitor Marrok also has psychometry. In Shadow Lord episode 5, Marrok touches a series of lightsaber burns from Maul’s fight with Devon Izara and Eeko-Dio Daki and hears echoes of screams from the fight.
While Maul – Shadow Lord didn’t outright depict Marrok experiencing a memory of Maul’s duel, the fact that he could hear echoes of Maul’s screams is fairly compelling evidence that he has Force pscyhometry. That would make him one of only a handful of Force psychometry users in canon, and place him among the ranks of Quinlan Vos, Cal Kestis, Ahsoka Tano, and Rey Skywalker.
Psychometry Is A Perfect Power For An Inquisitor & Makes Marrok A Much Bigger Threat
The simple fact that Marrok has the ability to use Force psychometry is a huge reveal about the character that makes him much stronger and more intimidating than he ever has been before. Prior to Maul – Shadow Lord, Marrok was a huge mystery. Marrok made his debut in Ahsoka only to be rather unceremoniously killed by Ahsoka. He was then revealed to be a reanimated corpse used by Morgan Elsbeth.
Based on his death in Ahsoka, many Star Wars viewers assumed Marrok was like the Eleventh Brother from Tales of the Jedi, namely an underwhelming opponent. He was a subpar Force and lightsaber user who did what Inquisitors so often do: die. Now that Maul – Shadow Lord has revealed that Marrok had Force psychometry, however, it turns out he was actually a massive threat and possibly one of the most dangerous Inquisitors.

Force psychometry is perfectly tailored to the requirements of being an Inquisitor. Inquisitors track and hunt Jedi survivors and other Force users, and psychometry would be a huge help in that task. Unlike his peers, Marrok can not only track Force users, he can determine where they’re going, what they were doing, and even glean information about who they were with depending on what kind of memory he picks up on by using psychometry.
Maul – Shadow Lord has already shown that Marrok is a much bigger threat than Inquisitors typically are in Star Wars. He held his own in a lightsaber duel with Maul, who is a seasoned master who has killed much more powerful Jedi like Qui-Gon Jinn. Marrok also tracked down Devon and Daki extremely quickly, likely due to the influence of his Force psychometry. This new reveal means Marrok could be a massive threat as Maul – Shadow Lord continues.
