Stephen King’s Single Location Horror Movie Haunts Global Streaming Charts 19 Years Later

It’s been almost two decades since Stephen King‘s horror film, which takes place in one location, was released in theaters, but all these years later, it’s finding renewed success on the streaming charts.

King is best known for publishing the bestselling books Carrie, The Shining, Stand By Me, and The Shawshank Redemption, among many others. He’s also written stories that take place either solely or largely in one location, including Misery, Gerald’s Game, 1408, The Mist, The Raft, and Survivor Type.

One of those horror bottle stories, 1408, just entered the Top 10 on Lionsgate+’s global streaming chart, where it’s currently sitting at No. 2, as of July 17, 2026. Taking the top spot is Divergent, with Boneyard, John Wick, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, We Were Soldiers, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Gods of Egypt, Feng Shui Master & the Pregnant Ghost, and Dirty Angels rounding out the rest of the Top 10.

1408 is available to stream on Lionsgate+ in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom, and in the Apple TV Store in Bahrain, Cambodia, Egypt, and Namibia, where it’s performing well. In the United States, 1408 is not available on Lionsgate+ but can be streamed for free on Fawesome.

The adaptation is based on a short story that King first released as part of an audiobook collection in 1999 before publishing it three years later in the Everything’s Eventual anthology that also included “The Man in the Black Suit,” “The Death of Jack Hamilton,” “Lunch at the Gotham Café,” and “Riding the Bullet.”

1408 centers on an author named Mike Enslin who checks into Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, even though he was told that the room has been at the center of several tragic incidents. When he enters, it quickly becomes clear that he should have heeded those warnings.

In 2007, the film adaptation, directed by Mikael Håfström with a script by Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski, was released in theaters. 1408 received positive reviews from critics and a Certified Fresh score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, it grossed $132.9 million against a $25 million budget.

John Cusack plays Mike Enslin in the movie alongside co-stars Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Tony Shalhoub, Len Cariou, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Kim Thomson, Benny Urquidez, Angel Oquendo, and Andrew-Lee Potts.

1408 isn’t the only time that Cusack and Jackson have starred in a King adaptation. In 2016, they reunited for Cell, but it received a limited release and was widely panned by critics with an 11% Rotten Tomatoes score.

As 1408 sees a resurgence, King‘s stories continue to be adapted for the screen. The past couple of years have seen the releases of The Life of Chuck, The Monkey, The Long Walk, The Running Man, and It: Welcome to Derry, among others, with Billy Summers, The Mist, and a reimagining of Carrie in the works.
