The latest superhero team in DC lore is brought together by Supergirl, who’s ready to take center stage in Kryptonian mythos. Dick Grayson-like independence was never the goal of the Super-Family. Nearly every major member of the Super-Family has joined a famous superhero team. Conner Kent evolved far beyond his origins through Young Justice, the Teen Titans, and multiple incarnations of the Titans, while Jon Kent established himself as a Legionnaire and a representative of a new generation of heroes. Steel has repeatedly helped the Justice League, and even Krypto has helped assemble the Super-Pets.
Kara Zor-El has repeatedly proven herself as an adaptable team player. Supergirl has been a key member of the Legion of Super-Heroes in multiple continuities, brought Kryptonian power and optimism to the Justice League, fought alongside younger heroes in incarnations of the Teen Titans, and participated in major crossover lineups involving virtually every corner of the DC Universe. Remarkably, Supergirl is a co-founder of the Justice League in the Arrowverse. In every universe and every team, Kara is equally convincing as a leader figure and a reliable powerhouse.
Despite her long history as an independent superhero and a temporary member of notable teams, it’s time for Supergirl to assemble her own superhero squad from scratch.
Supergirl Assembles Her Own Superhero Team
Supergirl #15; Written By Sophie Campbell; Art By Sophie Campbell & Tamra Bonvillain
Supergirl’s venture into the legendary Bottle City of Kandor proved more difficult than Kara predicted. Black Flame almost doomed Kandor and almost eliminated all of Kara’s allies. Thankfully, impressive efforts from every hero, like the enhanced Thundergirl and the Kryptonian-strong Luminary helped turn things around. In Supergirl #15, Kara brings Black Flame out of Kandor and pumps her with yellow sunlight, overloading the villain’s body until she’s weak enough to surrender and give up her ring. With Black Flame defeated, Supergirl is free to officially assemble a team composed of Thundergirl, Princess Shark, Nightflame, Lena Luthor, and Lana Lang.
Supergirl’s team of all-female superheroes debuts at the perfect time. Following the events of DC K.O., the Justice League granted amnesty to nearly all their most dangerous enemies. As a result, villains as dangerous as Lex Luthor, Cheetah, Giganta, and King Shark are technically members of the Justice League. After Supergirl #15, not only is Kara the leader of a completely independent superhero team, but it also features members that could easily have followed in Black Flame’s footsteps, but were put back on the right path by Supergirl.
Supergirl Deserves To Be The Leader Of Her Own Team
Kara Should Be More Than A Member Of The Super-Family
For much of her history, Supergirl has demonstrated every quality traditionally associated with great superhero leaders, but she has rarely been given the opportunity to command a long-term team of her own, by herself. Kara possesses extraordinary experience and the willingness to inspire others through action, qualities she has repeatedly displayed during her time with groups such as the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Justice League, and the Teen Titans. Supergirl’s perspective naturally lends itself to mentoring younger heroes and bringing together individuals who may feel overlooked or uncertain of their place.
Allowing Supergirl to lead her own permanent team would also represent an important evolution for the broader Superman mythos. Kara has spent decades serving as Superman’s ally and fellow member of larger organizations, but those roles no longer reflect the full scope of her character. She has accumulated a history rich enough to support a mythology that extends beyond the Super-Family, complete with her own allies and adversaries. Supergirl has already proven she can stand beside the DC Universe’s greatest heroes, and the next step should be allowing others to stand behind her.
