Despite several entries to the franchise since, Terminator 2: Judgment Day remains the pinnacle of the series and one of the most celebrated sci-fi movies ever made. James Cameron’s 1991 sequel expanded everything that made the original unique, but with groundbreaking new effects and blockbuster action sequences, not to mention the film’s surprisingly human story that warned us about the dangers of technological progress before it became a ubiquitous theme in the genre.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s portrayal of the iconic T-800 became one of cinema’s most recognizable heroes, while Robert Patrick’s seemingly unstoppable T-1000 still terrifies audiences more than three decades later. The film’s liquid-metal effects were revolutionary for the time, though that’s far from the only thing that made it a staple.
Judgment Day‘s staying power stems from its heart-pumping chase sequences, Sarah Connor’s transformation into a hardened survivor, the unlikely friendship between John and the T-800, and more. And now, over 35 years since it released, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is officially getting a brand-new adaptation that will let fans relive the experience like they never have before (via T2BG).
According to an upcoming project from designers at Cation Arts Inc., Terminator 2: Judgment Day is officially making a return with a definitive board game adaptation. The game is described as a tactical, dice-driven survival game, with Sarah and John Connor and the T-800 racing to stop Judgment Day while the T-1000 closes in. It’s a 1–3 player co-op experience, with the T-1000 controlled by the game’s rules, or can be played as a four-player one-versus-many mode where someone takes control of the T-1000 for themselves.
The game is designed across three chapters, with players completing objectives that can eventually unlock one of three Final Missions: destroy Skynet, hack it, or expose Cyberdyne’s plans. According to the game description, you don’t have to commit to one route immediately, allowing the group to change strategy as resources and circumstances shift.
The big “pressure” mechanic is Noise, where actions you take can attract the T-1000 and trigger ambushes, while the heroes gradually improve by gaining and upgrading dice, collecting weapons, equipment, and allies, as well as develop character abilities. The catch is that completing objectives also makes the T-1000 stronger, so the challenge builds as you progress.
A Kickstarter page for the game is now up in preview, although Cation Arts has not publicly announced a firm campaign launch date, and current materials still describe the crowdfunding campaign launch as TBD. That said, the Terminator 2 board game looks very promising, and you can sign up on the official website for updates and Developer Diary notifications ahead of the Kickstarter launch.
