The Boroughs creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews reveal the series’ long-term plans.
The creators and showrunners of the sci-fi Netflix series have opened up about their three-season plan as the show finally debuts on the platform. Produced by the Duffer Brothers, best known as the creators of Stranger Things, The Boroughs follows residents of a retirement community who must band together to stop a threat from beyond the known world that’s terrorizing the home in which they live. Season 1 consists of eight episodes, running with its mystery and unveiling shocking developments as a group of retirees fight against what’s coming after them.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan for The Boroughs, the creators expanded upon the three-season plan they have in place for The Boroughs. Addiss unpacked just how long the series could run for, which will depend on a few factors. This includes if the cast of the show wants to return to continue the story, including if they want to come back to film in Albequerque, New Mexico, where the show was shot. Audience retention and viewership will also be important to how the series’ future unfolds, too: The more viewers, the better.
Check out what Addiss had to say below:
ScreenRant: You’ve talked about a three season plan at least, I read. Is that in motion or…
Jeffrey Addiss: It really just depends on what people do and if they like it. It’s really as simple as the cast all love each other and we like making the show and we love Albuquerque. And if we get to go back and do it again, we know what’s going to happen. But we don’t know what’s going to happen in the next few days, so we’ll see. I hope people like it.
Although development of The Boroughs will depend upon viewership and whether the cast involved want to return, it seems like Addiss and Matthews have long-term plans for the show if it does continue. The larger sci-fi elements of the series act as a good baseline for how the series could continue, especially given the expansiveness of the mystery that unfolds throughout the show. This, coupled with its many dangers, indicates just how long the series could go on for given the opportunity.
The idea of how The Boroughs could continue somewhat mirrors that of Stranger Things‘ seasons, which were planned out into a long-form storyline following the success of season 1. Although it seems Addiss and Matthews might have a more thorough idea on where they want to take their show into the future, even if there are no guarantees of what’s to come. The series presents plenty of compelling characters played by talented actors, from Alfred Molina to Alfre Woodard, all of whom may be open to coming back depending on the show’s evolution.
Depending on how the series plans to unfold beyond season 1, there could be plenty of potential for even more stories in its world, featuring its lead characters continuing to protect those they care about. It’s a show that has already earned plenty of positive critical reception, too, meaning there’s precedent for it to succeed on viewership as more positive reception to it is furthered by its release.
The Netflix sci-fi series seems like it could be another big hit for the streaming service in 2026, should it earn the same positive trend in viewership that it has in reviews. Since The Boroughs has only just debuted on the platform, though, its future will be determined by just how well it does. If it succeeds, then perhaps Addiss and Matthews will be able to bring their full vision of the series to life.
