The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt reigns supreme, in the minds of many, as perhaps the finest fantasy RPG available, and it’ll likely remain that way for a while longer. However, another fantasy RPG, releasing in 2027, is poised to take its crown. That game is, of course, Fable, the long-awaited reboot of the iconic series that puts choice and freedom (and a little British humor) above all else. Fortunately, for those who don’t think in absolutes, the two will be able to coexist harmoniously, and serve as constant reminders of just how well serviced the fantasy RPG fandom is.
However, for those for whom The Witcher 3 and Fable are simply not enough, or for those a tad disappointed by the most recent Fable delays, there is another title that seeks to meld the two experiences together to offer a truly definitive fantasy RPG game. This new game, set to release later this month, may not sport the same bells and whistles as those aforementioned AAA titles, but the potential for greatness could very well be there, or, at the very least, it could end up being a bit of fun for Witcher and Fable fans alike.
Blending the free-form approach to build customization, high fantasy aesthetic, and whimsical British humor of Fable with the gritty, narrative-driven approach of The Witcher 3, Forsaken Realms: Vahrin’s Call aims to provide a fun-filled RPG adventure for an audience better accustomed to AA releases. Developed by debut studio Titan Roc, Forsaken Realms: Vahrin’s Call looks like it could very well be the perfect title for fantasy RPG fans reeling off the alleged cancellation of Avowed 2.
Forsaken Realms: Vahrin’s Call is a narrative-focused action RPG that focuses on build craft and removes the constraints of class design. Players can utilize absolutely everything at their disposal in combat against the varied forces of evil attempting to tear them down. From bandits to the terrifying creatures invading the Vale of Vahrin, there are plenty of bodies to pummel. Naturally, with it taking a little bit of influence from the likes of Fable, there are a handful of more playful abilities, such as an ability that can transform enemies into everyday items, and a two-handed frying pan weapon.
However, when players aren’t questing around the Vale of Vahrin and solving the plights of the common folk, they’ll be engaged in an unfolding story that is aiming for grand ambitions and an epic overarching narrative. It all sounds perfect, and, should Titan Roc be able to pull it off, it could be the AA equivalent to the likes of The Witcher 3 and Fable. At the very least, it’ll help fill the gap between its release date and the upcoming brand-new Witcher 3 DLC.
Forsaken Realms: Vahrin’s Call is set to release on July 27, 2026, and is available to wishlist right now over on its Steam store page. The developer is highlighting a number of the game’s core features and mechanics in a miniseries uploaded to its YouTube channel that prospective fans can check out to get more detailed information. Frankly, it is great to see more AA and indie fantasy RPGs launching, especially in the wake of recent cancellations and studio closures, if only so there’s more to play during the lengthy waits between The Witcher and Fable games.
