This Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Footage Is Stunning

Just saying the phrase Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic is enough to activate the entire fanbase. It’s an iconic game that’s maintained its hallowed status for several decades, especially the first game. It taps into elements of the Star Wars universe that few projects did at the time, and that sentiment remains to this day, under Disney.

The literal Old Republic setting is something fans have been clamoring for more of, but no one seems capable of really delivering on that promise. While a KOTOR remake is allegedly in the works, it may never see the light of day. Over on X, however, it’s easy to see the path to progress.

While the Knights of the Old Republic remake is currently facing production issues, a fan named Mykhailo Moroz posted a remakethey call a “more ambitious path tracing project” that they’ve been trying to get off the ground for multiple years. They looked at remaking the first two KOTOR games and kicked off with a native Vulkan path tracer in an existing open-source engine.

From there, they mixed things up significantly: “Right now I use the Nvidia Real-time denoising library + FSR 2.0 in nativeres TAA mode. I’ll probably make my own denoiser as NRD isn’t compatible with the GPL license of the engine. I’m pretty sure if I used DLSS RR it would likely work much-much better, but maybe in the future.”

“That looks beautiful! Really breathes some life back into KOTOR,” one fan wrote in response. “This brings back so many happy memories, great progress,” another responded. Folks are really taking to it, especially since the official remake could languish in development hell forever.

There is more work to do before this project is finally done: “Unfortunately, this engine still lacks a lot of the main game, but I thought it is a better idea to put this on top of an actual engine rather than something like RTX Remix which tries to reconstruct the scene from the captured draw calls, you actually have more room for optimization.”

When Knights of the Old Republic is finally remade, whether it’s a fan project or an official one, lots of Star Wars fans will be there. It’s a classic entry in the franchise for a reason.
