Ubisoft Cancels Highly-Anticipated Game According To New Leak

Ubisoft‘s upcoming slate has gone through a lot of shake-ups recently, and the most recent leak suggests yet another casualty. Earlier this year, Ubisoft officially canceled six games, including the troubled remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. These changes came amid restructuring and lay-offs, including Ubisoft’s formation of a new subsidiary to handle its major franchises.

The publisher has also delayed quite a few games, and a rumor last week suggested that the next Far Cry game is still having plenty of development trouble. Now, a much cozier title, which was thought to be safe as of last week, is reported to be the latest cancellation.

Ubisoft’s Animal Crossing Rival Is Reportedly Canceled

According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft has now canceled Alterra, an in-development game meant to target the same audience as the Animal Crossing series. The development of Alterra was originally reported by Insider Gaming in 2024, but Ubisoft never officially announced the game, so a detailed public statement on the cancellation seems unlikely.

With voxel graphics, Minecraft-style gathering and crafting mechanics, and characters with an alleged resemblance to Funko Pops, Alterra also sounds like it could have been similar to the recent hit Pokopia and the Dragon Quest Builders games. No reason for the cancellation has been reported, but no lay-offs related to the end of the project have yet been announced.

This Is A Missed Opportunity

Recent years have made it increasingly obvious that Ubisoft is a victim of its own over-expansion, so the continual shift toward a more focused business model isn’t exactly shocking. Without any information about how Alterra‘s development was proceeding, though, this particular cancellation may be more surprising.

The cozy game market is bigger than ever, and despite an over-abundance of farming sims and decorating games, true Animal Crossing rivals — especially from AAA studios — are hard to come by. For those without Nintendo hardware, Alterra could have been a hit.

With Alterra presumably out of the equation, life simulation fans can still look forward to Animula Nook and Petit Planet, two officially revealed free-to-play games in a similar vein. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream also recently released on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, bringing the chaotic appeal of Tomodachi Life‘s random interactions back after a long hiatus.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more about what happened with Alterra soon, but I wouldn’t count on getting any real details out of Ubisoft regarding the subject. If I’m keeping my fingers crossed for anything, though, it’s simply that the pace of cancellations and lay-offs at studios like Ubisoft slows down sometime soon.
