One of the stars of the Harry Potter franchise has a new fantasy horror movie that will soon be available to stream at home.
The eight-part Harry Potter film series proved to be a massive hit right from the start when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released back in 2001. After the final movie came out in 2011, stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson continued to stay active in the entertainment industry with films, TV shows and Broadway productions.
Grint’s latest project, Nightborn, will be released on Shudder on July 31. In the fantasy horror film, which was directed by Hanna Bergholm, the Harry Potter actor stars alongside Seidi Haarla as Jon and Saga, a husband and wife who start a family while living in a house in the middle of a Finnish forest.
What should be a happy time in their lives turns out to be a nightmare after they witness disturbing behavior from their newborn.
Their co-stars are Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey and John Thomson. Bergholm co-wrote the script with Ilja Rautsi, and the producing team included Daniel Kuitunen, Nick Shumaker and David Levine.
In a statement, Bergholm, who previously directed Hatching, said that she’s “really excited” for Nightborn to be released on the horror-themed streaming service Shudder. “Nightborn is a film made for genre enthusiasts, parents and anyone who has ever asked themselves: Why do I feel different?“
Hanna Bergholm: ”I am really excited for our film to be released on Shudder! Nightborn is a film made for genre enthusiasts, parents and anyone who has ever asked themselves: Why do I feel different?”
Emily Gotto, the senior vice president of Shudder Acquisitions and Production, explained that the horror film, which has a 73% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, “delivers tension and shocking moments surrounding parenthood and self-discovery—with a touch of humor,” before adding that she is “thrilled” to be able to share Nightborn with Shudder subscribers.
Emily Gotto: “Hanna Bergholm’s audacious sophomore follow-up to Hatching delivers tension and shocking moments surrounding parenthood and self-discovery — with a touch of humor. We are thrilled to share Nightborn with audiences.”
Earlier this year, Nightborn competed at the Berlin International Film Festival and will soon premiere at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal, Quebec, on July 22.
Nightborn arrives on Shudder 15 years after Grint ended his decade-long run playing red-headed Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter movies, which collectively grossed more than $7.7 billion. The final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, released in 2011, is currently the 22nd highest-grossing movie of all time with $1.34 billion.
After the Harry Potter movies ended, Grint went on to appear in movies like Into the White, Underdogs, Moonwalkers and M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin.
On the small screen, his TV credits include Snatch, Sick Note and The ABC Murders. He was then cast in Shyamalan’s psychological horror Servant, which ran for four seasons on Apple TV and earned the Harry Potter alum a Critics’ Choice Super Award nomination for Best Actor in a Horror Series.
Grint also performed on Broadway and the West End in Mojo and It’s Only a Play.
Now he’s back in the movie world with the horror flick Nightborn. Later this year, he’ll return to the big screen as Bob Cratchit in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, Ti West’s adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel.
Nightborn will be released on Shudder on Friday, July 31, 2026.
