Marvel Officially Reveals Tom Holland’s Winter Spider-Man Costume For Brand New Day

[

A new look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day revealed a different iteration of Tom Holland’s superhero costume in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Since the actor joined the MCU over a decade ago in Captain America: Civil War, Holland has had a number of different Spider-Man costumes.

There was the first Stark Tech suit and his homemade costume in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the Iron Spider suit in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the all-black and the red-and-black suits in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and more. Holland has worn at least two different Spider-Man suits in almost all of his solo outings, and the ending of his last appearance set up another new costume.

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was revealed that Holland’s Peter Parker had sewn himself a new red-and-blue suit that could be seen as he swung through the buildings of a snowy New York City. It was a return to the classic Spider-Man color scheme from his early MCU appearances, but still offered something new since it wasn’t a Stark Tech costume.

The red-and-blue suit will return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland’s next appearance as Peter Parker, and while it might be the only costume the superhero wears in the movie, there’s a slight alternative revealed in a new look at the MCU film. In Marvel’s recent video highlighting the practical production on Brand New Day, a winter version of Spider-Man’s costume is revealed, at the 5-second mark.

What Tom Holland’s Winter Spider-Man Costume Means For Brand New Day

While the puffer vest and winter hat aren’t the first time we’ve seen Holland’s Peter Parker don civilian clothes over his Spider-Man costume (since he wore his yellow academic decathlon blazer over his suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming), it is the first time the character has worn clothes over his superhero costume based on the weather. Previously in the MCU, Peter’s Spider-Man suits were made with Stark Tech, and included gadgets to help Peter regulate his body temperature.

However, Brand New Day will be one of the few times Peter has worn a superhero suit without all the bells and whistles added by Stark Tech. This further marks Spider-Man’s evolution beyond Tony Stark/Iron Man’s protégé, establishing him further in the MCU as his own hero, and closer to the comics iteration of the character. Peter’s winter suit is another indication that this is a more classic version of Spider-Man than we’ve seen previously in the MCU.

Considering how often Holland’s Peter Parker gets a costume upgrade or an entirely new suit in the MCU, it begs the question of whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day will continue that trend or be a departure from it. Although the costume in Brand New Day was revealed at the end of No Way Home, we only briefly saw it in action, so it will likely continue to be Spidey’s main suit through most of the new movie.

While it’s possible that Holland’s Spider-Man might acquire a new suit toward the end of Brand New Day, it feels unlikely. The in-universe reason for Peter’s new suits was his connection to Tony Stark and Stark Tech, which gave him the opportunity to upgrade his costumes. With Peter no longer having that connection due to Tony’s death and the memory spell that made everyone forget who he is, there’s less reason for him to get a new suit.

That said, the real-world reason for Spider-Man to keep changing costumes is so that the MCU movies can sell new toys with each iteration of the suit. Since that motivation never goes away, it’s likely we’ll see variations on this classic red-and-blue costume, like the winter version with the hat and vest. This gives Marvel the opportunity to sell new toys while maintaining the same base suit.

So, although it seems like the days of MCU Spider-Man constantly getting new costumes are over, it’s not surprising that there will be minor adjustments and additions to the suit. However, adding a winter hat and vest to the costume feels more in line with the comics, so it’s nice to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day embracing this aspect of the character. Hopefully, there will be more costume tweaks like this in the future.
